Tameghroute is a back country village in the deep Draa valley, 480ml south of Marrakesh. During our last visit to Morocco, we met with some really inspirational artisans and craftsman specialising in the authentic Tameghroute green and yellow / caramel pottery. The distinguishing characteristics of Tamegroute ceramics is the glaze intensity and colour, consisting of 80% manganese, 19% silicon and 1% copper. The 1% copper together with the clay out of the Draa river-bed is exactly what forms the characteristic green colour. In some cases, the copper is replaced with iron oxide to produce more of a brown/olive coloured result.Tameghroute, with each rich and vibrant history is a home to seven naturally fired kiln. Each family owns an oven creating this unique pottery style with it’s own Royal Green and Yellow / Caramel authentic signature shades and glaze. The river and the Draa valley earth are the essence of this unique work of art pottery. The potters dig up the clay and then spin and shape the clay into these unique pieces. The pottery is hand dipped into either green or yellow glaze mixtures giving it these unique and distinctive colours. The pottery then baked in one of the seven ovens using only renewable wood to fire it at high temperature reaching up to 1200c. All pieces are fired underground over a period of days. The unique process is like no other and each piece produced bares it’s own marks, patterns and traits.
